I just acquired a FARNELL stabilized power supply,
model G12-20A. (He had picked it up from a "lab-dump" a
while back..)
Just wondering if anyone has any specs/schematics sitting
around for this, so that I can get a copy. I will cover
usual costs, of course..
(If it works when I plug it, I probably won't need anything, but
you never know..)

Well I would like to know if anyone has had bad or good experience with
a certain model hand-held. This is for a person that is just starting
out in the ham realms.
Radio Shack's HTX-202 VHF-FM 2-Meter Hand Held
What is the average range you have had with this model? Is it easy to use,
(i.e. program, button size)? Any complaints, what would you change?
How is the sound quality (both Tx and Rx)? How is the reliability? How
about the accessories, any good (Mic and Mag Mount Ant)?
Let me know your true feeling about the unit, here or by private reply.
Thanks to all in advance for your help, it is greatly appreciated!

Subject: Icom R100
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
Earlier this week I posted the following to rec.radio.scanner and
rec.radio.amateur.equipment:
I have a friend who is interested in the Icom R100. If you have
experience with this radio, he'd appreciate hearing your comments
(both pro and con) as well as alternative suggestions. Pointers
to anyplace where discussions about the R100 might be archived
would also be useful. I'll forward replies.
Well, either nobody feels very strongly about this radio, or all of
you R100 owners (or former owners) assumed that somebody else would
answer. The only substantive reply I got was from Richard Crisp.
(Thank you Richard).
So this is a second attempt. I'll also add that I seem to remember
that there was a series of several Icom wideband receivers (possibly
including the R1 and the R100) which were not too well received (no
pun intended). I recall hearing about problems with important
characteristics like selectivity. Is there any truth to this
(specifically with respect to the R100)?

It is really good for satellite work such as INMARSAT, SCPC or FLTSATCOM.
It is a bit lacking as a scanner, the HF selectivity is pretty bad
but it does have good sensitivity over the entire tuning range. It does
have three antenna inputs, one for HF, another for VHF/.UHF and the third
for microwave. This is a very good feature which allows three different
antennas to be connected to it concurrently.
No other scanner in that form factor has this feature to my knowledge.
No computer interface, 1khz is the tuning resolution, and it does not
support SSB or CW as previously noted.
I own 2 of them and would like to have a third if that is helpful.

Kieth, I have a desperate measure of absolutely last resort which has
worked for me on several occasions with vacuum tubes.
While restoring an old Dumont oscilloscope (is there any other
kind?) I discovered that the serial filament chain pixie had struck
again - and that the culprit was a very rare and expensive ballast
tube. The break in the filament was visible. Figuring I had nothing
to lose, I applied power to the filament leads with alligator clips
and, holding the tube upside down, tapped it so that the filament ends
touched and arc-welded together. Much to my amazement, this actually
worked - and the darn thing is STILL running. Talk about
jury-rigged... But, I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for the
nearly unavailable tube, and the scope works. I treat it as if it's
an atomic bomb - I know it must be VERY fragile...
I never thought this would work, because of the severe thermal
and physical stresses encountered in filament operation... but hey,
the proof's in the pudding!

Any general comments on the preferences among Kenwood,
Icom, Yaesu, Racal, and Motorola in terms of useability,
durability, reliability?
Very broad question I realize; no doubt there are R-wars,
like between Post and K&E slide rule lovers, HP and TI
calculators, PC and Mac computers, and (perhaps) Icom and
Yaesu lovers. But seriously, are there any significant
differences in the "ilities?"
Different features and implementations, perhaps, but hard
core differences?

I don't know about the Optoelectronic Freq Ctrs, but their R20 had sooo many

one was bad the day after I got it.

I bought one in about 1971. It was a decent barebones rig. It was made by
Yaesu (I think) and was sold in other parts of the world as a FT-200.
There was no provision for CW filters (that I know of) so some kind of
external filtering might be required if you use CW a lot. It uses a
external power supply, which I assume you get with the radio? If it works
$60 will get you a nice little rig.

The Tempo One was my first rig. I bought it abt 2 yrs ago for $225 (a little
too much). I had great fun with it on SSB and CW but it does not have all
the bells and whistles you might need. I found the noise filtering to be
the biggest problem. I sold it for $175 and bought a Kenwood TS830
Now Im a happy camper.
