  41. model G12-20A. (He had picked it up from a "lab-dump" a
  42. while back..)

  101.   Well, either nobody feels very strongly about this radio, or all of
  102. you R100 owners (or former owners) assumed that somebody else would
  103. answer.  The only substantive reply I got was from Richard Crisp.

  106.   So this is a second attempt.  I'll also add that I seem to remember
  107. that there was a series of several Icom wideband receivers (possibly
  108. including the R1 and the R100) which were not too well received (no
  109. pun intended).  I recall hearing about problems with important
  110. characteristics like selectivity.  Is there any truth to this
  111. (specifically with respect to the R100)?

  141. It is really good for satellite work such as INMARSAT, SCPC or FLTSATCOM.
  142. It is a bit lacking as a scanner, the HF selectivity is pretty bad
  143. but it does have good sensitivity over the entire tuning range.  It does
  144. have three antenna inputs, one for HF, another for VHF/.UHF and the third
  145. for microwave. This is a very good feature which allows three different
  146. antennas to be connected to it concurrently.
  147.  
  148. No other scanner in that form factor has this feature to my knowledge.
  149.  
  150. No computer interface, 1khz is the tuning resolution, and it does not
  151. support SSB or CW as previously noted.
  152.  
  153. I own 2 of them and would like to have a third if that is helpful.

  205. Kieth, I have a desperate measure of absolutely last resort which has
  206. worked for me on several occasions with vacuum tubes.
  207.         While restoring an old Dumont oscilloscope (is there any other
  208. kind?) I discovered that the serial filament chain pixie had struck
  209. again - and that the culprit was a very rare and expensive ballast
  210. tube.  The break in the filament was visible.  Figuring I had nothing
  211. to lose, I applied power to the filament leads with alligator clips
  212. and, holding the tube upside down, tapped it so that the filament ends
  213. touched and arc-welded together.  Much to my amazement, this actually
  214. worked - and the darn thing is STILL running.  Talk about
  215. jury-rigged...  But, I didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for the
  216. nearly unavailable tube, and the scope works.  I treat it as if it's
  217. an atomic bomb - I know it must be VERY fragile...
  218.     I never thought this would work, because of the severe thermal
  219. and physical stresses encountered in filament operation... but hey,
  220. the proof's in the pudding!

  288. I don't know about the Optoelectronic Freq Ctrs, but their R20 had sooo many 
  289. problems, always blowing out because of static, that I have decided not to buy 
  290. from Optoelectronics.  I had to have the R20 replaced four times, and the last 
  291. one was bad the day after I got it.

  315. I bought one in about 1971. It was a decent barebones rig. It was made by
  316. Yaesu (I think) and was sold in other parts of the world as a FT-200.
  317. There was no provision for CW filters (that I know of) so some kind of
  318. external filtering might be required if you use CW a lot. It uses a
  319. external power supply, which I assume you get with the radio? If it works
  320. $60 will get you a nice little rig.

  359. The Tempo One was my first rig.  I bought it abt 2 yrs ago for $225 (a little 
  360. too much). I had great fun with it on SSB and CW but it does not have all
  361. the bells and whistles you might need. I found the noise filtering to be
  362. the biggest problem. I sold it for $175 and bought a Kenwood TS830
  363. Now Im a happy camper.
